Responding to another incident last month when Ukrainian troops were accused of attacking a village in the province, Ukrainian troops said, "These are baseless allegations made by Russia."Ukraine is conducting a self-defense campaign in its territory and is fighting only Russian attackers, not civilians," the military said on April 19.

Russia last month also accused Ukraine of carrying out a helicopter attack on a petrol station and firing rifles at a provincial depot, both of which Ukraine denied. This comes three months after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops for the first time in Ukraine to carry out what he called a "special military campaign" to end the war and "contempt" for the country.

Russia's state-run news agency Interfax reports that since the start of Putin's attack, Kyiv has repeatedly attacked the Belgorod region, with more than 200 buildings destroyed. Many mysterious fires have erupted in the region in recent weeks. Ukrainian authorities have not yet officially claimed responsibility for the fire, which is still being investigated by Russian authorities.
